APOLLO 15

LUNAR ROVER

Reference:

These are the reference images I found for the Apollo 15 lunar rover. Some of the images had slight variations because they were taken at different times and in different places (some test runs on Earth, some during the mission on the moon). However, I did my best to find commonalities. Some of my findings in these images were quite surprising, such as the fact that the wheels are actually transparent in the right lighting.

Modeling in Maya:

For this project, I had no polygon limit. My main goal was making the vehicle look as realistic as possible.

Texturing in Substance Painter:

I put my models into Substance Painter for texturing, where I baked the mesh maps in order for Substance to utilize normal, world space, ID, ambient occlusion, curvature, and thickness maps. Then I was able to utilize Substance's smart materials and smart masks along with painted textures
