The goal for this project was to use lighting in order to assist narrative. It was also an exercise in lighting character animation.

Some of the specific lights used in this animation:

  • A spotlight with an animated Arnold gobo to interact with the atmospheric volume and approximate light caustics filtering through the surface of the water. This is the gobo I applied to the light:

  • Two area lights attached to the fish's eyes in order to create highlights.

  • ​3-point lighting (key, fill, rim) on both characters.



I put the footage into AfterEffects in order to layer in some brightness and add a bloom effect to simulate an underwater presence.
